Walter Benedict literary notebooks, 1833-1837.

Two bound manuscript notebooks and one fascicle containing over 50 verses and essays on a variety of political, social, and religious topics, written in Illinois, Indiana, and Tennessee. Includes a 7 page essay on Mormonism with a note that it was published in the Danville (Ill.) Enquirer Oct. 17, 1833, and a poem on the same topic entitled "New Revelation." Other topics include the Black Hawk War; Andrew Jackson; the immortality of the soul; fatality and free will; Memphis, Tennessee; Indiana; and Frances Trollope. The notebooks also contain a short story entitled "The Maniack," set in a mansion in Connecticut and featuring Native Americans and African Americans, as well as acrostics and magic squares.
